Thank goodness it’s Friday, am I right? What a week we’ve all had, so much to do! I’m unplugging until Monday but I’ll be back then with a new week of blogtime fun. :) I am so busy this weekend that I don’t know how I’m going to do all I have on my list in two days, including a trip to southern Rhode Island, but I shall unplug and conquer. Rrrrrr!

See you on Monday!

I hope you have a lovely little weekend for yourself, that you get to enjoy family & friends, slip in a little something artsy ‘n craftsy, and don’t forget to schedule some ‘you’ time even if it’s just laying in the park with a book you’ve been meaning to read or a visit to your favorite cafe to meet a good friend. It’s all about taking a pinch of time for the little things which really are big things since they feed the soul like crazy and can cause all sorts of creativity and ideas to flow. When in a rut, move thy butt, right!?

Thank you for sharing another week with me here on decor8, I’ll see you in a few days!

It’s nice to be nice, what a sweet print — I especially like that it appears to be on a biscuit that resembles a Bahlsen cookie. Cute!

Have you checked out Paper Source lately? I threw down a chunk ‘o change there last night to satisfy my paper cravings (and to organize my office) but you know, I have no real habits — I don’t smoke, I barely drink, you’ll never find me in a nudie bar with ten dollar bills (what a visual! he he!) and I’ve cut out Starbucks (almost) from my life, I go there maybe once every two weeks vs. daily as before — so I made room in my budget for the occasional paper splurge. Justified. I feel much better. What did I buy? For one, the cat butt pencil sharpener (my word) and some PaPaYa! file folders. Here are a few others that I liked, some went into my shopping cart while others remain on my wish list for pining…

Office Update

In no order, but I assure you all are accounted for in this link list: Curry dots bracket label, the purple comp journal, paper suitcases with striped interiors (I ordered two, one in chartreuse and the other in papaya), white cat pencil sharpener, file folders with pink birds, fish letterpress cards, orange paisley thank you notes, pool cloud dots label and the holy crap eraser.

What's This Cuteness, You Ask?

This camera is so much fun and the business card sized photos are just too cute for projects and journaling. I can’t wait to start using it. I just unwrapped this little guy today so I’m hoping tomorrow will be a sunny day so I can find some willing flowers to pose for me.

I’ve been working on this interview for a few days after seeing German artist Carolin Samson comment on my blog recently. I clicked over from her comment and viola! I discovered her blog and Flickr photos. Upon noticing her flea market addiction, I knew I had to write to her to learn more about her life and work. Here’s what I found out after chatting with her.

Artist Carolin Samson

Carolin lives in Regensburg (Bavaria) with her husband Lutz and studied art, German literature, textile design, philosophy and public relations (bio here). A few years ago she relocated from Hamburg to Regensburg where she works in public relations and as a blogger for a finance company. In Hamburg, Carolin taught art and had a gallery there called Kunst Leben.

Artist Carolin Samson

In Bavaria she offers art classes on her day off and is working on some fun new creative projects with other artists in her local community which include a food/art event and a pop-up store showcasing the work of up-and-coming young artists. She also has a blog called Day Date that I just discovered last week, it’s great! Would you like a glimpse of her home? In addition to pretty photos I’ve also asked Carolin a few questions about her decorating and inspirations as well as life in Germany.

Artist Carolin Samson

Hi Carolin! The first question I have for you is this: what inspires your decorating choices? I collect knick knacks for years at flea markets, during my travels or in nice design/decoration stores. I love these often kitschy objects and love to have them around me every day, so that it’s important to me that the knick knacks are kept in special places. All the other things I love are placed around them.

How many rooms is your apartment? Four - 1 room for me, 1 room for my husband, 1 living room and 1 bedroom, and we have also a bathroom and a kitchen.

What do you love about Germany? I love the creative places you can find in almost every city. If you want, you can realize here all your dreams. Germany offers you a lot of opportunities.

Artist Carolin Samson

What do you like to do for fun in your city? We have a lot of places here in Regensburg to visit like the historical part of the town with the bars and cafés. And an art scene were you can find many exhibitions and new galleries.

Do you travel much, if so where do you go for vacation? I traveled the world with my parents when I was young. I also studied in Paris and Venice. Then I lived one year in Mexico teaching art. Now my husband and I travel often, at least until we have kids ;-)) . Last year we went to Malaysia, Finland, France, Africa, Los Angeles… and in six weeks we will go to New York and then to the Maledives. I love to travel. It’s the most inspiring way to live.

Where do you shop for most of your interiors items? At flea markets.

Artist Carolin Samson

What trends do you notice in German decorating right now? The German creative scene loves the mix of classic design like Bauhaus, new design and stuff from the flea market. Habitat and IKEA is very important for the basics, especially for the students. But you can find more and more independent design shops with lovely things from all over the world (for example - ok-ok versand).

What are some of your favorite magazines? Oh! I’m addicted on magazines. I read almost everything about decoration, lifestyle and fashion. My favorites are at the moment: Blonde and cut. But I read also every issue of Vogue, Elle, Elle decoration, Casa Deco, Elle bistro, Decoration and Häuser.

It was nice to meet you Carolin and thank you so much for sharing bit of your apartment today! :)

I peeked in on her Flickr photostream this week to see what she’s been up to and noticed a few scrapbook pages that she pulled together that looked more like something you’d frame and put on the wall - I did a double take and thought you’d like to see them. Lovely! The blogs are a buzz with sharing and chatting about the new IKEA PS collection for 2009. It’s funny to read all the opinions out there, some love IKEA, some discredit it as being for the college crowd only, and others don’t seem to have a set opinion — me, well I really love some of this stuff. I I mean look at their latest additions, what’s not to love?

IKEA

I’d use the coffee table as a bench for displaying books and art in my office, the stool would be great for stacking towels in the bathroom, and the light would be gorgeous suspended over a circular wood table surrounded by these great chairs also shown above. The vase I’d use for a patio space, several in a row would look nice on a bench. You can even have some fun with this stuff and paint it, the stool would be cute if you decoupaged the top and painted each of the legs in a fun color, for instance. I can see that chair in black leaving the white part white with a black/white patterned cushion on the seat. Fun!

To me at least, IKEA is not just for the college crowd or for people who are broke or in need of some temporary furniture. Sure, some items aren’t made too well just like the stuff you’ll find at Target and other big box stores, but overall I’m very happy with the things I’ve purchased there throughout the years (I shopped IKEA before they came to the east coast, carting stuff over by place from England).

Truth is, I’ve purchased things from designer wares on down to thrift store finds, spending $500 on a single lamp to $20 for a flea market find and in the end I don’t always see price as a sign of quality or craftsmanship. Sad, but true.

What do you think about shopping IKEA and particularly, about this new collection?

Indiska is based in Sweden and they sell all sorts of gems for the home in addition to fashion and accessories - and I can’t read Swedish but it even looks like they have a restaurant called Hurry Curry which offers catering services. I have to make sure I look for this place the next time I find myself in Stockholm because I love their quirky, colorful style, don’t you?

Indiska

These are a few of my favorite things, especially the picnic blanket with the pom pom trim for a Saturday in the park. Ah, so cute!

I wonder if this Hurry Curry sign shown above is an actual poster you can purchase because I want one!

The Indiska blog is fun because they take you a bit behind-the-scenes of photo shoots, fair visits, and trends that are hot currently in Sweden. It’s only in Swedish though, unfortunately, but you can at least enjoy the links and photos which you can find here.

Words cannot express how badly I want to be seated at this table, at this moment… this looks so festive and exactly how I would sum up the perfect summer’s day. Have you heard of the Sunday Suppers blog?

Sunday Suppers

It’s a beauty-filled burst of flavor and color with images that will make you want to run to Brooklyn and participate in their next class. Class, you say? Oh yes… You can dine at this table. Really. There next class is Sunday June 7 and the theme? Food & Wine Pairing — A French Dinner. All I can say is Sign. Me. Up.

These photos were taken by Karen Mordechai (a Brooklyn-based photographer with a beyond gorgeous blog) and I really can’t resist looking at them over and over again. The flowers are by Jessie at Rountree Flowers (be sure to visit Jessie’s portfolio - wow).

More about Sunday Suppers and further confirmation that I need to take a trip to Brooklyn this summer, “Sunday Suppers is a collaboration by Casey Solomon and Karen Mordechai. We share a class-cooking-dining experience, pairing friends and food. The food is market fresh, local and organic and the approach is to create seasonal and fresh meals together. The classes are held in Brooklyn, New York, taught by Casey Solomon and photographed by Karen Mordechai.” If you’re interested in taking a class email: karenandcasey [at]gmail.com

Inspiration overload, am I right? Oh what a yummy post this is…

It’s a great circle we’re a part of, thank you for being so loyal, supportive and well… thanks for being my friends! On the little faux bois vase in my office I’ve tied a tag that says Thank You. I’m so cheesy! But I really mean it!

Happy Weekend!

This weekend we have a nice day off to extend our pleasure as Monday is a holiday (memorial day) so I’ll be back here blogging on Tuesday, May 26th. Until then, I wish you a lovely three days off with your friends and family and I hope that you get some nice weather in your part of the world.

See you on Tuesday, friends!

And when I try to choose a favorite from her myriads of exceptional photos I simply cannot. But then again, I don’t need to. Though I do keep returning to this single stack of books — it is one I’m particularly fond of because it inspires me to grab some of my own journals, create a pretty pile, and click away. I especially love her inspiration board below, don’t you? It’s not styled to absolute perfection, instead it is very fresh, organic and personal…

Maybe this weekend if we get some good natural light in the house, I’ll do a little picture taking. I’m waiting for this fun camera that I ordered from Tokyo to arrive — it’s the coolest thing — I will show and tell once it gets here I promise. But yes, if the weather is good I will take some photos over the weekend. We’ve had so many moody weather days lately but then again, this is New England - cold tomorrow, 95 and sunny today. Except for yesterday, I spent the afternoon dining outdoors and then laying in the nearby park on the freshly cut green grass enjoying the sunshine and warm intoxicating breezes (I could smell the grass mixed with lilac blossoms, our state flower). Ah, summer is here a bit early this year but I’ll take it. Gladly. :)

I really need to break down and shell out the thirty-six dollars this magazine will cost me because it’s making quite the impression on lots of my online friends these days. It’s called Dujour magazine, their roots are in America, and I’ve pointed you to it before but I’ve not included photos or anything. Just look at some of these spreads — talk about inspirational eye candy. I want the vintage issue quite badly as the theme really suits me…

Dujour Mag

Dujour Mag

Dujour Mag

Each issue is limited-edition (only 1,000 distributed worldwide) with custom wrapping and a special gift inside making the $36 investment somewhat easier to swallow. I think in America it’s harder for us to drop that kind of cash on a single magazine when we’ve been trained to pay $12 for 12 issues or at most, $4 for a copy of our favorite magazine. I’m interested to see if Dujour will be a hit here because of that or not. In Europe and beyond, it’s not so difficult to market a magazine like this as so many pay $10-12 an issue on average for high end design and fashion mags as it is. I have yet to see a copy so I can’t give a very good review, but from what I’m noticed around the web, it looks delicious and I’m intrigued. You can also buy digital copies — a full year is only $10 but a year doesn’t mean 12 issues, it’s 2 6 total (not 12) just so you know.

Have you purchased Dujour? What did you think? First impressions?
